Deputy Mayor kicks off Youth in Action Expo

Hundreds of young people from various schools and communities packed the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) this Wednesday for the opening of the Youth in Action Expo that runs until Thursday, 26 June 2025. The expo features over 170 exhibitors that range from universities, colleges, maritime industry companies, work-abroad programmes, internships and a number of City of Cape Town departments showcasing what opportunities exist in their respective fields.

‘I encourage the young people in attendance here today to walk around, pick up brochures and ask as many questions as they can. Initiatives like this youth expo instil a sense of hope and faith in one’s own abilities, regardless of circumstances or where they were born. I also want to thank educators, who play an important role and function in building our society. Let’s make sure that no opportunities are wasted,’ said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.

The doors to the expo were opened by the District Six Hanover Park Minstrels, led by Alderman Eddie Andrews, Gift of the Givers’ Imtiaz Sooliman, Western Cape Education Department’s Dr Ismael Teladia, Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Nonceba Mhlauli and the CTICC’s COO, Tracy Mkhize.

‘This year’s Youth Month theme is ‘Skills for the Changing World – Empowering Youth for Meaningful Economic Participation' and this expo opens up that world of possibilities. When you are asked, ‘What are your plans next year?’ you will have an answer after this expo. I encourage the youth to dream big, choose careers they are passionate about and help us build our City and country in general,’ said Alderman Andrews.

Young people from as far as Worcester eagerly engaged exhibitors that ranged from the South African Police Services, Law Enforcement, False Bay College, University of the Western Cape, Stats SA, Cape BPO, Thembikhaya Youth Foundation and the City of Cape Town’s Human Resource’s department to name a few.

Entrance to the two-day expo is free and it is organised in partnership with the Western Cape Education Department.
